A new state regulation goes into effect on March 27, 2016, requiring all medication prescriptions to be electronically prescribed. This requirement affects all medication prescribers, including physicians and dentists. (Veterinarians are excluded)

ICD-10 is implementation is less than 30 days from today. Is Your Practice Ready?

As of October, 1, 2015, providers who fail to use ICD-10 codes will not be paid.

There was a big anniversary. Did you miss it? Medicare and Medicaid celebrated 50 years old.

On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the bill that led to the Medicare and Medicaid. In 1972 Medicare expanded to cover disabled, ESRD (people with end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or kidney transplant and people 65 or older that select Medicare. More benefits such as prescription drug benefits have also been offered.

Medicaid initially provided medical insurance coverage for people that were getting cash assistance. Now the program also includes:

  • People of all ages with disabilities
  • Pregnant women
  • Low-Income families
  • People who need long-term care

In 1997 another program was developed to provide preventive care to approximately 11 million uninsured children. That program is called The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This is well accepted as some working families that are uninsured earned too much to be Medicaid eligible. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have CHIP plans.

More recently in  2010 The Affordable Care Act (ACA) introduced the Health Insurance Marketplace. Consumers can now go to a single place to apply for and enroll in private health insurance plans.   CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has produced a website I came across and is great resource for preparing for ICD-10. Go to the url  www.roadto10.org and you will find helpful information.

At the moment there are 4 webcasts available to watch, and then it looks like there are another 2 planned.  I think these will be useful to you in your preparations for the ICD-10 transition.

The 1st Annual 5 Boro Chamber of Commerce MBWE Awards was held on January 22, 2015 at the Schimmel Center @ Pace University, NYC. This event celebrated the successes of MWBEs in New York City. Each chamber honored one woman and one minority business owner from their borough.

Brooklyn honored Vanessa Best, CEO of Precision Healthcare Consultants.

Vanessa is known for helping doctors get paid faster. She began a fledgling medical billing firm, obtaining her first contract with a doctor who opened his own practice after a leaving a prestigious NYC hospital. Now, armed with over 25 years of experience, there is nothing novice about Precision Healthcare Consultants which provides clients which range from Private Practitioners to several Health Care Centers in Brooklyn with services such as ICD-10 adoption, revenue cycle management, credentialing, marketing, auditing, medical billing, clinical documentation programs and office management training.

“Being invited by Veronica Harris, Chair of MWBE Committee at Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to attend a meeting with the group several years ago was the start of me taking my business to the next level,” states Ms. Best. She adds, “The numerous resources of the Committee enabled me to obtain my NYS & NYC Certification, network with phenomenal entrepreneurs, receive practical tools to grow my business and access to opportunities available. I had the honor of having mentors like Juan Perez of Hybrid Media, that encouraged me to apply to the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program which was another highlight of my career.”

Under the leadership of the President, Carlo Scissura, it is no surprise that The Brooklyn Chamber is the Best Chamber in NY. The mission and vision is clear:

Mission: The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce promotes economic development across the borough and serves as an advocate for its member businesses. Our mission is to promote a healthy and robust business environment throughout Brooklyn.

Vision: The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is the foremost resource for doing business in Brooklyn, respected as a leader in advancing public policy, new technologies, products, services and programs that support and promote a vibrant local economy.

Vanessa Best commented, “To be awarded by The Brooklyn Chamber at The 1st Annual MWBE Awards by TD Bank was an amazing honor.” The program was introduced by NBC 4 Report Lynda Bacquero. The packed audience also heard from Maria T. Springer, NYC Commissioner Department of Small business Services and Julie Menin, Commissioner Department of Consumer Affairs. Ms. Best received her award from Brooklyn Chamber President Carlo A Scissura and Ms. Denis Arbesu SVP/RM at Citibank & Officer, Chair, Brooklyn Chamber.

More CMS "End to End" Testing Coming - In addition to the upcoming end-to-end testing week January 26-30, CMS will host additional end-to-end testing opportunities in 2015.  As we did with this round of testing, RelayHealth will aggressively pursue the opportunity to be selected for these subsequent rounds. However, please note that beyond submitting an application for each MAC, we do not have any further influence or control over participant selection.

How many times have you wanted to start your own business, only to find opportunities that scammed you? You have probably heard about Medical Billing, but wondered, Is this really a good opportunity? In 2012, CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) processed insurance claims resulting in $77 billion paid to doctors. This fact has spurred a need for medical billers.

CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has produced a website I came across and is great resource for preparing for ICD-10. Go to the url  www.roadto10.org and you will find helpful information.
